This was my intro into anime. What a fantastic film. I found the different antagonists in this movie so captivating. Definitely recommend.

Spirited Away

A comedy/romance with surprisingly dark themes (read: I'm pretty sure it's also psychological horror). A magical being tries to make the protagonist (Anzu) fall in love but Anzu resists. A lot.

Anzu is a wonderful character, both on a comedic and serious level. The "love interests" are great too.

Warnings: attempted rape (I meant what I said, it gets DARK), stalking, trauma, bad parenting (bordering abusive or neglectful), blood, slavery

Magical girls making wishes and fighting witches but dark and mysterious. Somewhat well-known in the magical girl genre, for good reason. It's very well-crafted - you can see the world's rules and characters' actions and goals influencing the story episodes before they're said out loud.

Sci-fi war between mechas and monsters (AKA the two things that look good in Netflix's 3D animation) with time travel, which is quite unique and deep, but still makes perfect sense.

The main cast is great, everyone has a unique personality and reactions to events and revelations.

Apparently a lot of people find the protagonist annoying (he is proven right after people hated him for a decade and has a big superiority complex for most of the series) but his character arc of getting humbled is done very well.

(OC) Thirteen from Scissor Seven

It's about an amnesiac - Seven - who needs money, so his friend makes him become an assassin. Seven's weapon are scissors he controls with magic. Despite the premise, the 1st season is pretty lighthearted (though there's one S1 episode that was unexpectedly dark). The show's main 

. There are a whole bunch of side characters, which are still relevant in the newest season, even though it's plot-heavy. 

Season 4 is going to be released on the 21st this month!

Warnings: murder (duh), suicidal tendencies, mentions of cancer.

This one's about the (self-proclaimed) greatest swindler of Japan - Makoto Edamura - who gets out-scammed by Laurent Thierry, who's probably the best in the entire world. They end up scamming criminals together.

. There was a lot of thought and effort put into the different languages spoken (in the Japanese version at least) - for example, Laurent's VA for speaking English has a French accent, and the characters who are supposed to speak Mandarin actually speak Mandarin.

Warnings: selling children, murder, abuse, terrorism, trauma, depression, drugs, alcohol, smoking, unspecified terminal disease.

Kotaro is a 4-year-old who moves into Karino's apartment complex. Karino ends up taking care of Kotaro, together with the other neighbors.

The series is largely episodic, with a few multi-episode plotlines. The 

dark themes and cute things make each other hit harder.

Warnings: child abuse, child abuse victim justifying child abuse, child neglect, death.
