What gets me, is that these types of things are ironically racist towards the people that they are meant to protect. By hiring based on race, gender, or sexual identity opposed to merit, they are basically saying that those people do not have the merit for the role without special hiring practices being put in place to ensure that they get the job. Surely the most qualified person should be getting the role?

This makes a ton of sense. Fight racism with racism.
"In two recent job postings for Canada Research Chairs in computer science at the University of Waterloo, applications are restricted for those who identify as “women, transgender, gender-fluid, non-binary, or Two-spirit” in the first case, and to members “of a racialized minority” for the second."
